When the Covid-19 pandemic started, everyone thought of different ways to help. Working with a partner, we designed a device you can attach to your person to check and see if you are maintaining proper social distancing.
After story boarding and working on sketch iterations of the device, named Stay Away, we prototyped it using an Arduino module, ultrasound, and contactless temperature sensor.
As part of the prototype, we wrote a simple program to test if a person is too close, the ultrasound module finds its distance away, but it can not tell the difference between a person or a wall. The temperature module checks whether it is a person and not a wall.
The state changes if the distance is less than 6ft, and the average temperature changes by more than 2 degrees. The alert state will stay active until the space is greater than 6ft or the average temperature changes more than 2 degrees.
